A lot of people favor the idea of keeping a dog as a pet, but they are unable to invest the time and money required to take care of these canine companions. It is true that all pet dogs need care and attention. However there are some dog breeds that need much less maintenance in terms of both time and money. There is no definitive low maintenance dog breed as such. Instead, there are different breeds that require less attention in different areas. For those who wish to own a pet dog but also secretly wish that the dog could in some way look after itself, here is some information on some dog breeds that don’t really require you to wait on them round the clock.

For Grooming

There are a lot of dog breeds that do not require much grooming. They are usually the shorthaired ones. These breeds do not require much combing or trimming of their hair. Also, the ticks can be easily spotted in these breeds. The breeds like Beagles, Boxers and Basset Hounds do not need to be taken to a professional dog grooming service regularly. This saves a lot of money. You can easily use a grooming brush to brush their hair. Also, you do not have to do it daily, hence you save your time and efforts.

For Training

Training a dog requires a lot of time and money. But a pet dog needs just some form of basic training. There are various breeds that can be trained easily. You can get a Collie, a Poodle or a German Shepherd. A Border Collie, an English Cocker Spaniel or a Miniature Schnauzer is also good. You can also get a Doberman Pinscher, a German Shorthaired Pointer or a Shetland Sheepdog.

For Physical Activity

If you do not want to invest any time or money in your dog’s physical activity, then adopt one from the following breeds. You can get yourself a Beagle, a Dachshund or even a Great Dane. They are less active and hence require less physical activity. These breeds are also good, if you live in an apartment. This is because they do not require much space for moving around.

For Housekeeping

Breeds that shed lots of hair, often add up to the cleaning cost of your house. Also, they need to be taken care of more at the time of shedding. Thankfully, there are some breeds that shed less hair. In fact some of them shed just as much hair as a normal human being.

There are breeds like Wheatons and Schnauzers that shed very less hair and are easy to take care of. Then there are the Terriers that never shed a single hair, ever. There also are some poodles that don’t shed a lot of hair, in spite of having the curliest of locks on their body.

To select the best low maintenance breed, the best way is to talk to other people who have pets from any of the above mentioned breeds. A lot can be learned from their experiences. Their insights can be a big help in choosing the best breed.

There is one thing that should always be remembered; just because they are low maintenance does not mean they can do without the daily supply of love and affection. Make sure you have enough of that to give.
