Acai Berry vs. Pomegranate

Heard about the miracles of acai berries and pomegranate yet? For those who have not, there have been claims that eating acai berries or pomegranate alone will make you lose weight pain-free and fast. In fact, advertisements have filled every inbox of almost everyone I know! This begets the question: Are they really effective or just a fad? And which is better? Acai berries or pomegranates?

Firstly, it is true that the acai berry and pomegranate are fruits that are very healthy and will aid the body’s function. That being said, it is not a cure-all remedy and miracle fruit that will turn you thin without any effort. In the end, the health benefits of acai berries and pomegranate is greatly exaggerated in advertisements. Still, they are fruits which provide certain benefits which should be looked into.

Acai berry

Studies have shown that the acai berry contains a great amount of antioxidants, even more so than red wine, blue berries and other fruits. Antioxidants slow down the oxidation of other molecules. This will slow down the aging process; maintain bodily functions and immune systems and increase energy and overall health.

Although the benefits of antioxidants are clear, excessive antioxidants may actually harm the body. During exercise, oxidation increases which contributes to the breakdown of muscles and fatigue. If excessive antioxidants are consumed, the oxidation process will be inhibited. This affects the recovery and adaption of the body to exercise.

There are also studies that show that acai berries help kill cancer cells. The main benefits of the acai berry are their high amounts of antioxidants, fiber and essential fatty acids.

Pomegranate

The benefits of pomegranate are similar to the acai berry. They both are rich in antioxidants and provide many health benefits by reducing the oxidation effect in the body. A study also shows that they are also capable of fighting cancer cells.

Pomegranate also reduces the clogging of arteries by manipulating cells that produce nitric oxide. Other studies have also shown that it prevents osteoarthritis by slowing down cartilage deterioration.

The benefits of pomegranate are very similar to the acai berry. They both are high in antioxidants, fight cancer cells, slow aging and the oxidation process in the body and increase overall health in general. But the pomegranate can also stop the clogging of arteries and prevent osteoarthritis, so technically, it is better right? Well, not really.

Although the pomegranate may seem better than the acai berry, that’s not exactly true. The acai berry has actually more benefits than the pomegranate. This is because of the higher antioxidant value in the acai berry. The acai berry also has more fiber and essential fatty acids when compared to the pomegranate.

As a weight loss supplement, the acai berry wins. The additional antioxidant, fiber and essential fatty acids are rarely found in a fruit and are mostly consumed separately by multiple food sources. These benefits are very vital to weight loss. The acai berry is also cheaper and easier to find than pomegranates.

Although these super foods are great for health and in general, it cannot be mistaken as a food to replace vegetables, meat and other essential foodstuff. But as a supplement to your current diet, it works great. One last note of caution: Be careful of those acai berry and pomegranate scams!
