What exactly is a “Chick Flick”? Usually this is a romantic comedy or a tearjerker. Some women may object to the reference, but it has become a staple in the film industry. They are also quite often a guaranteed box office moneymaker. The average guy cringes when told his significant other wants to see one of these movies.

Here is a list of some of the best Chick Flicks of 2009.

He’s Just Not that into You

Scarlett Johanssson, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Connolly, Jennifer Aniston, and Justin Long star in this tale of the signals that the sexes exchange, even when they don’t realize they are doing it. Adapted from the best seller by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo (the writers of “Sex and the City) the plotline here is just as convoluted. Drew Barrymore also stars in the Ken Kwapis (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, License to Wed) directed romantic comedy.

The Accidental Husband

Uma Thurman stars as Dr. Emma Lloyd, a Radio talk show psychiatrist. When a woman calls to get advice about her fiancé, Emma advises her to break off the engagement. The jilted man, Patrick (Jeffery Dean Morgan) decides to retaliate by breaking up Emma’s happy relationship with her fiancé, Richard. (Colin Firth) Through a misguided prank gone wrong, Patrick and Emma are listed as married. Emma doesn’t realize this until shortly before her wedding to Richard, when she applies for her marriage license. Patrick feigns no knowledge of the “marriage” and soon Emma must choose between the practical Richard and the spontaneous, charming, and passionate Patrick. Directed by Griffin Dunne.

Bride Wars

Best friends since childhood Emma and Liv (Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson) are proposed to by their respective boyfriends on the same day, and choose the same Manhattan Wedding Planner. Through a scheduling error, both of their weddings are booked on the same day at the famous Plaza Hotel. Obviously, one of the ladies will need to choose a different venue. But which one? The war is on. Candice Bergen plays the famed Wedding Planner, Marion St. Claire.

The Proposal

Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds star in this romantic comedy. Margaret, a high-powered book editor (Bullock) from Canada is facing deportation when her Visa expires. She comes up with a plan to stay in the States. Margaret orders her assistant Andrew to marry her so she can get a Green Card. He agrees reluctantly, if she will give him a promotion. Immigration is suspicious and plans to test them to see how well they actually know each other. In the middle of this, Andrew has to go home to Alaska for his grandmother’s 90th Birthday. Betty White plays Grandma, while Craig T. Nelson, and Mary Steenbergen play his parents.

Julie and Julia

Meryl Streep and Amy Adams star in this film based upon the memoirs of both famed TV Chef Julia Child (Streep) and Julie Powell (Adams), who vowed to prepare all 524 recipes in Child’s famous book in one year. The film shows both women achieving their dreams. The characters never meet, but you get the feeling that Powell truly understood the struggles of her idol to follow her dream. Stanley Tucci (The Terminal) appears as Child’s husband, Paul.
