Best Elementary Schools in Virginia

If you’re moving to Virginia and are considering the quality of education when deciding where to live, you’ll soon find that the northern part of the state has quite a few private schools. This is because many of its affluent residents are connected to careers in Washington, DC.

It’s impossible to rank private elementary schools since most specialize in one or more areas. Some feature curricula solely for the gifted and talented, while many are linked to religious denominations. Others draw students particularly proficient in sports like soccer.

A number of Internet sites rank public schools. Many of them charge parents for database searches. Most of the free ones only allow you to search by the name of a school, city or school district.

However, SchoolDigger is a free site that also allows you to pull up the top public schools in all 50 states. Its Virginia elementary school rankings are based on the results of Standards of Learning (SOL) math and English reading tests. These exams were administered to third, fourth, and fifth graders during the 2008-2009 school year.

Unless otherwise noted, each school listed serves pre-kindergarten (PK) through fifth grade. Here are the top schools among 1,050 Virginia elementary schools:
