The Samsill Biodegradable 3 Ring Binder
With Earth Day right around the corner (April 22nd) I thought it would be an appropriate time to do a review of some green office supplies. This Biodegradable 3 ring binder that the nice folks from Samsill sent over to me to check out seemed like a great place to start.
Samsill Biodegradable 3 Ring Binder with Removable Rings
To start with, this binder has a 1″ ring and measures 11″ x 8.5″ and also has a clear plastic sleeve on the cover and spine that you can put a customized cover page in, and it also has one pocket on the inside of both the front and back covers. The binder is also non-stick to avoid lifting print, and PVC and acid free so it is archival safe. These earth friendly binders are also available in D-ring format, as well as multiple other larger and smaller ring sizes ranging from .5″ to 5″.
Now the thing that makes this what I’d consider a cool office supply AND at the same time still a green office supply is that the shell is not only made of 50% recycled content (47% post consumer) and the metal component that makes up the 3 ring binding mechanism can be removed because instead of permanent rivets as are customary with other 3 ring binders, they use screws that you can easily take out before disposing of this earth friendly 3 ring binder.

Above is a photo of the metal portion of the environmentally friendly 3 ring binder cleanly removed with the screws and locking caps. According to the Samsill website, this biodegradable 3 ring binder’s “polypropylene cover is formulated to biodegrade in microbial landfills within 5 years verse the hundreds of years it takes normal plastic.” Now I know that there are some differences in the benefits of products that are biodegradable, degradable, and compostable when it comes to the way they break down, where they break down best, and the amount of energy used to produce such items, however I personally believe that as long as we have multiple options, and open debate and discussion, it will ultimately lead to better and more earth friendly office supplies, or other products.
With all of that said, I have to say I am impressed by these biodegradable 3 ring binders from Samsill, you would never be able to tell the difference between them and a regular one. They feel just as sturdy, the locking ring mechanism works as expected, and they look great. If you are in the market for new 3 ring binders, I don’t see any reason not to at least give these a try, oh, and on top of them being green office supplies, they are also made right here in the US, so that is another great reason to give them a shot.
