College Scholarships for Women

With college tuition and costs on the rise, financial aid is even more important to students seeking a higher education. There are many financial aid opportunities available to help defray the costs of a college education, including college scholarships targeted towards females only. Where does one find college scholarships for women? Listed below are a few organizations that offer college scholarships for women.

Talbot’s, a leading women’s clothing store, has run a scholarship program called the Talbot’s Women’s Scholarship Fund since 2007. Focusing on women who have earned their diploma or GED 10 or more years ago, each year Talbot’s awards six $10,000 scholarships to women wishing to further their education. In addition, to the six $10,000 college scholarships for women, sixty $1,000 scholarships are also awarded annually. Scholarships are primarily awarded based upon financial need. Though the Talbot’s Women’s Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to women seeking both two-year and four-year degrees, only those women seeking a bachelor’s degree are eligible to receive a $10,000 scholarship from the Women’s Scholarship Fund. Best yet, last year there were only 3,000 applications for the 66 scholarships, so the odds of being awarded a scholarship are fairly good.

Business majors may also wish to apply for the Zonta International college scholarship for women. Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarships are awarded to twelve females pursuing undergraduate degrees in business. This college scholarship is worth $5,000 and previous recipients can apply to have their scholarship renewed. To qualify, the woman applicant must be seeking an undergraduate degree in business and have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies. An essay is also required to apply for this scholarship opportunity.

College scholarships for women studying to be engineers are available through the Society of Women Engineers. In 2008, the SWE awarded more than $400,000 in financial assistance to women seeking undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering, engineering technology and computer science. Future engineers from freshman through graduate level are encouraged to apply, as scholarships and fellowships range from $1,000 to $10,000. Recipients may also apply to have a scholarship renewed.

Female college seniors enrolled as computer science or computer engineering majors (or another closely related field of study) can apply for a Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship. This college scholarship for women awards $10,000 to recipients, which can be renewed by reapplying the next year if pursing a graduate degree. Engineering or Computer Science majors are eligible to apply for the Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship if they are maintaining a 3.5 GPA or above, and are enrolled as a full-time student. This scholarship is also available to female engineers from around the world such as Europe, Canada, Africa, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand.

In addition to these highlighted college scholarships for women, women seeking to further their education should speak with their college’s financial aid department to determine if there are any local scholarships available to them to help with college costs.
