East of Europe and north of Africa, there are many countries that start with the letter H. Croatia is the 26th largest country in Europe and has a population of 4.2 million. Croatia is also very old; it has been around for thousands of years. It is known as the crossroad between East and West. The country’s capital city is Zagreb, which was once a powerful medieval kingdom that stretched into modern-day Hungary and Turkey.
Haiti
Haiti is a Caribbean country that was first populated by Arawak Native Americans. They colonized the island about 400 AD. Haiti has had a long history of slavery, intermingling with other cultures, and political turmoil. The capital of Haiti is Port Au Prince, while the largest city is Cap-Haïtien. The population is largely black with some French, Spanish, Arab, and West African descendants mixed in.
Holy See
Located in Italy, the Holy See is the city-state that houses the central governing body of Roman Catholicism. There are many people who are not aware that this is one of the smallest country in the world with only 100 acres of land. The Holy See consists of a collection of buildings that are built on top of a small hill and has a population around 800. The country has been at peace for centuries and it has not been invaded since 1537.
Honduras
Honduras is located in Central America. With over 7 million people, the population of Honduras is ethnically diverse, consisting of mestizos, whites, blacks and indigenous peoples. Honduras’ economy is primarily based on agriculture and industries such as mining. The country has a constitution that was put into place in 1982.
Hong Kong
Hong Kong is a small, autonomous Chinese city-state located on the Pearl River Delta. The territory lacks any natural resources and is heavily dependent on imports from mainland China. The city was first settled by the British in 1842, after they defeated China to gain control of this strategic location.
Hong Kong has been governed under a capitalist economic system since 1912, although the PRC set up the Special Administrative Region (SAR) with its own social and political systems.
Hungary
The country of Hungary is located in the East-Central Europe and shares borders with Moldova, Ukraine, Russia and Serbia. This landlocked country covers an area of 93,030 square miles and has a population of just over 10 million people. Though Hungarians are mostly Christian, there are other religious minorities such as Muslims, Jews and Romany Gypsies that live in the country.
