Field Notes Dry Transfer Template Kits

The Field Notes Dry Transfer notebooks are a really cool concept, and I remember having this…um “technology” when I was a kid, so it brings back great memories.   In each kit, you get three unbranded Field Notes notebooks, and they come with the big sheets of letters and numbers that you see in the photo above.  In order to customize your notebook, you lay the sheet of letters over your notebook cover, line up the letter with where you want to place it, then rub the tip of a pencil over the top of the letter, and it transfers the letter from the sheet to your notebook cover.  The Field Notes website also has a template that you can tape your blank notebook to that helps you line everything up nicely.

Field Notes Dry Transfer on Template Before Customizing

Here you can see the blank Field Notes notebook taped to the template that shows where you can draw guide lines in pencil to help make sure you put your letters down neatly and all lined up.  I used painters tape to affix the notebook to the paper template because it peels off clean and without ripping the notebook.  The template has both horizontal and vertical lines to help not only center your text, but also keep it level as you go from left to right.  It also helps you keep the spacing between lines of text consistent, and gives you the option to lay out either 2 or 3 lines of text.

Field Notes Dry Transfer on Template After

Here is the final product, still attached to the template.  My alignment was not perfect, but all things considered, I was pretty pleased with how it came out for my first try.  The whole process took me about 15 minutes, and I would imagine that when I do a second and third version, I will get much better at it.  One concern I did have was that they have you draw a few lines in pencil on the cover to help align things, so I was worried that erasing the line when I was done might remove the text or leave visible marks on the cover, and that was not at all the case.  Below is a great video with detailed instructions on how to customize your Field Notes notebook:
