In the ongoing battle of the bulge, many people try fad diets, pills, goofy contraptions that end up gathering dust in the garage, and of course, starving themselves. Time and again all of these methods fail. Any weight that may have been lost only ends up finding it’s way back on to your hips, stomach, thighs, etc. along with a few more pounds. Fact is, if you starve yourself your body’s metabolism will slow down in an effort to retain that weight, and add more in order to keep it’s reserves up.
So what is a person to do?
First you should change the way you think about food. You also need to consider what the word “diet” really means. Most people have the idea that a diet is something you do for a while to lose weight but it isn’t. The term means a lifestyle of eating and the habits that are developed should be long term. So, a basic change in your attitude and dietary lifestyle is generally what is required in order to achieve the desired weight loss and to maintain it.
Fortunately, there are some basic foods that are pretty common to every one’s diet that help out in the eternal battle of the bulge. (NO…Mickey D’s or any other greasy junk food joint isn’t part of a healthy diet!) With a little bit of portion control and common sense, anyone can beat the “beach whale syndrome”.
Rolled Oats, flax meal, and whey protein are some of the best things to start your day off with. Breakfast is a must! Breakfast jump starts your metabolism, and rolled oats along with the flax meal and whey protein give your body and brain the carbs and protein it needs to function all morning long.
Nuts, nuts, nuts! Almonds, pistachios, cashews, walnuts, and any type of nuts are loaded with the good omega fats. They are high in fiber, protein and antioxidants. Just a single serving of nuts can give a heaping, healthy dose of all these things and help rev up your metabolism to keep burning those calories.
Yogurt is another excellent and tasty food that helps stimulate that sluggish metabolism. This delicious food has all the pro-biotic cultures that are necessary for a healthy digestive tract, and also is an excellent source of calcium.
Green Tea has proven to be one of the best things you can drink to help stimulate your metabolism. Not only will it stimulate that droopy metabolic rate, but it is loaded with cancer and age fighting antioxidants.
Beans beans! The musical fruit…are ladened with fiber and protein. The fiber in beans makes you feel full for a longer period of time and also helps keep the ol’ digestive tract running smoothly.
Spinach is one of the best leafy greens you can eat…especially raw. (cooking destroys most of the nutrient value) Spinach contains muscle repairing qualities along with free-radical fighting properties in quantities that most other leafy greens have in smaller levels. It is also loaded with Vitamin C, Iron, Antioxidants, Magnesium, and other essential minerals that a body requires to function properly.
Other metabolism boosting foods are peanut butter, water, xxtra virgin olive oil, berries, cayenne pepper, salmon, vegetables, coffee, eggs and apples.
