A kidney infection usually starts in the bladder but the bacteria which causes it can travel to the kidneys. A kidney infection may come on suddenly then become worse. Symptoms may include pain, fever, chills, vomiting and a frequent urge to urinate. There may also be lower back pain and burning upon urination. In some cases, a person may experience an inability to urinate. Kidney infections are usually caused by bacteria such as E. Coli. Women are often more prone to urinary tract and kidney infections since the urethra is shorter which makes it easier for bacteria to travel to the bladder and kidneys.
Although a kidney infection is traditionally treated with antibiotics, there are several things you can do at home to treat infection and speed recovery. Drink plenty of water to help flush the bacteria out of your system. You can also drink fresh fruit juice such as apple juice and vegetable juices such as the juice from asparagus or celery. Cranberry juice is a popular and well known home remedy for kidney infection. Avoid drinking alcohol or beverages that contain caffeine while you have a kidney infection since they can aggravate the condition. Fried or spicy foods should also be avoided. Kelp is effective in fighting kidney infection so include some in your diet.
Heat can help alleviate the pain and discomfort that accompanies a kidney infection so the use of a heating pad for the back or abdomen may help. Wear comfortable clothing and women should wear cotton panties that allow moisture to escape rather than materials that keep moisture in thereby creating a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. They should also avoid using perfumed soaps or feminine products that contain perfume which can cause further irritation.
Some people swear by the effectiveness of certain home remedies for treating kidney infection. Drinking a glass of water with a teaspoon or two of real lemon juice added to it can be a good remedy for kidney infections. This remedy works on a two-fold principle since water helps to flush bacteria out of system and lemon juice has antiseptic properties which help rid the body of bacteria. Drinking a warm glass of milk with a teaspoon of turmeric mixed in may also help provide relief from the discomfort of kidney infections.
Although you can take steps to speed your recovery at home, it is important to remember that a kidney infection can be a serious illness and may require treatment with antibiotics. Recurrent infections may indicate an underlying cause that requires medical diagnosis and treatment. Prevention is always the best course of action. Drink plenty of water, use proper hygiene and avoid holding back from going to the bathroom. Empty your bladder as often as you feel necessary. By taking a few small precautions you may be able to prevent the spread of bacteria that causes kidney and other infections. Kidney infections are painful, uncomfortable and can lead to potential complications if left untreated. Take preventive measures and seek medical treatment if you experience symptoms associated with kidney infections.
