A Tin Container of J. Herbin Fountain Pen Ink Cartridges – Eclat de Saphir or Sapphire Blue

Today we have another produc (J. Herbin Ink Cartridges in Eclat de Saphir) that Brad from Jetpens sent over for review, and it is something that I don’t use that frequently, so I thought this was a good chance to add a bit of variety to the site.  Usually I stick to bottled inks, so using cartridges was a nice change of pace.

Without even using these ink cartridges, I already like them just because of their unique little tin canister that holds all 6 of the cartridges for you.  These cartridges are the short international size, and are the color  Eclat de Saphir or Sapphire Blue, which is a bit of a smoky purple in my own opinion, and not really a “blue” but I do like the color either way.  From a technical perspective, the ink is pH neutral, light fast, and water based.

I did my writing sample using my Schrade Tactical fountain pen in my Black n’ Red notebook, which has some pretty nice paper in it, and all went well.  The ink flowed very smoothly, and there was only a very tiny bit of feathering, and definitely no show through to the other side of the paper.  From my testing I was not able to get much shading with this ink, the color was pretty consistent and a bit on the translucent side.  At this point I’m on the fence when it comes to cartridges as compared to using a converter or piston fill fountain pen, and I dont have a really good reason as to why.  The cartridges are definitely quick, clean, and easy, however I really like the experience of filling my pen directly from a bottle.  If you take the ink delivery method out of the picture though, and focus only on the ink itself, I really dont think you ca go wrong with the J. Herbin Ink Eclat de Saphir, so give it a shot if you are looking for a nice muted stone grey/purpleish ink that seems to behave very well.  Thanks again to Brad and the folks at Jetpens for sharing this ink to review.
