4.5 Ounces of Noodler’s Year of the Golden Pig and an empty Platinum Preppy Highlighter make for the ultimate long lasting and permanent highlighter.

In the time that I’ve started this blog on office supplies, I’ve had one question that seems to keep coming up regarding a Long Lasting Refillable Highlighter that wont fade and will hold up to the demands of a highlighter happy law school or medical school student.  There are a ton of options out there for highlighters, but knowing the demands of law and medical school students, I think that a refillable highlighter is the best option, so Ill be exploring that in this review.

Components of the Platinum Preppy along with some silicone grease that will get you started on your way to a highlighter that will get you through law school or med school.

Some of the complaints that I have heard from people regarding their regular highlighter is that they run out of ink too quickly, and that after a while the ink tends to fade.  Most law students and medical students that I have talked to have complained that this causes them to spend a fortune on finding a highlighter that will work for them, and that will last for as long as they need it to.  With the combination of items we have here (Noodler’s Year of the Golden Pig and a Platinum Preppy Highlighter body) you have the makings of a long lasting and no-fade highlighter for about $20.  The additional benefit of making yourself a highlighter like this is that it is much more environmentally friendly because you are only using one pen body instead of constantly purchasing new disposable highlighters.

Noodler’s Year of the Golden Pig Bulletproof and refillable highlighter ink.

The standard Platinum Preppy highlighter comes with small ink cartridges that are convenient and easy to work with, however they dont offer the same length of life that you can get by just filling the entire body of the pen with highlighter ink.  They also sell packs of replacement tips for when the old tip starts to fray or get too dirty.  The ink of choice for this project is Noodler’s Year of the Golden Pig.  The benefits of this ink are that it is bulletproof, which means it resists fading and removal due to light, water, and other chemical solvents, plus it comes in a giant 4.5oz bottle with an eyedropper cap for easy filling.

Comparison of a 4.5 oz bottle Noodler’s Year of the Golden Pig to a standard 3 oz. bottle of Noodlers ink.

For those of you who are a little more visually oriented, I’ve included the above photo to show the difference between the 3 oz. (right) and 4.5 oz. (left) of Noodler’s ink.  The regular 3 oz. bottles of Noodler’s inks seem like they last forever when loading up my fountain pens with them, so the larger 4.5 oz. bottle for highlighters, Im sure will have that same feel.

Now that you have seen of all of the tools and supplies that you will use to make this ultimate long lasting highlighter, lets take a look at how to get started on this very easy project.  The photo you are looking at above is the grip section of the Platinum Preppy with a thin even coat of silicone grease applied to the threads.  The silicone grease will help to ensure that none of the highlighter ink leaks out through the threads of the section.  Now go grab the body of the Platinum Preppy to get ready for the next step.

Fill up your eye-dropper with some of the Noodler’s Year of the Golden Pig highlighter ink.

With the body of your Platinum Preppy in hand, fill up your eye-dropper with the Noodler’s Year of the Golden Pig, and dispense of it directly into the body of the pen.  You may need to take a few more fills of the eye-dropper, but keep filling the pen body until the ink level reaches just below the threads where the section gets screwed in.

The Platinum Preppy body full of highlighter ink, and the excess silicone grease that you will need to wipe off.

Once you reach the threads with the ink, simply twist the section of the pen back on tightly, and wipe away any of the silicone grease that squeezes out the sides.  Now you have a full highlighter with a clean tight seal, and you are almost ready to put it to use.

The close up photo above shows the Platinum Preppy felt tip as it absorbs the ink from the body of the pen, you can see a few white spots on it still.  Once the ink hit the shaft of the tip that goes up into the body of the pen, it took only about 2 minutes before the entire tip had become completely yellow and full of ink.

Testing out the new highlighter. The true intensity of the color does not show when scanned.

Finally its time to test out the pen and see how your new highlighter works.  Unfortunately, the scan wont show the true intensity of the ink, but this is a very bright and solid color and is perfect for highlighting.  Interestingly enough, even with the bright color of the ink, you dont get any bleedthrough to the other side of the page, and it also seems to have dried fairly quickly.

All of the items in this review were purchased from Writers Bloc (no discount or consideration was given to me for this review), and as I said, excluding the shipping charges, this new long lasting highlighter will cost you about $20.  Not only do you get a highlighter that has ink which will maintain its very bright qualities wherever you highlight with it, but you now also have a highlighter that will last you a very long time, and you wont have to worry about it running out on you since you can always just top it off with the eye-dropper.  Hopefully all of you law students and future doctors will find this write up helpful for your highlighting needs, feel free to share your future services with me free of charge to show your appreciation. 😉
