OttLite Side View While Switched On
The good folks at OttLite asked if I would be interested in checking out their new OttLite natural daylight desk lamp, and giving away 3 of them to some lucky readers, so of course I jumped at the chance to check out this cool light and give you guys a chance to win one. It was also good timing because I am trying to make sure I mix things up a bit and review more cool office supplies that are not just pens and notebooks.
OttLite Natural Daylight Desk Lamp Front View
The OttLite natural daylight desk lamp will literally change the way you look at things. The special full spectrum lamp creates the closest thing you can get to natural daylight, and will help you to see colors more accurately while also reducing eye strain and glare. When I plugged this light in and turned it on, I quickly noticed that instead of the usual yellow tinged hue kicked out by traditional light bulbs, I was seeing a much more crisp clean white light that really did light up my desk as if I was outside.
When I sat down to read with the new desk lamp, it showed a more dramatic difference than I had initially expected. The black text on white paper in the book I was reading really jumped off the page instead of how with a normal light, it is sometimes more like a dull washed out look. For the most part, I’ve never had any significant or noticeable fatigue when reading under a normal light, but I can imagine that for someone who does have those problems, this light would probably make a difference. I also did some checking around online and there are many people including artists and photographers who rely on these lights to bring out detail and bring out the true colors in the items they are working with. I also feel that in addition to the cleaner and crisper appearance of what I was reading, the light really gave a more vibrant feel to the room I used it in which is kind of hard to quantify. I never would have noticed how dull and dreary a regular light-bulb can make a room look and feel if it weren’t for this OttLite natural daylight lamp.
A Closer Look at the Push-Button On/Off Switch
Visually, the OttLite natural daylight desk lamp immediately reminded me of the shape of a stingray. To further cement that image in my head, the way that the cord comes out the back also looks like it could be a tail. At its peak, the desk lamp measures about 14″ high, and from the front to back it is about 13″. The footprint of the desk lamp is relatively small at about 5″ wide, and about 7″ from front to back. Another nice thing about this lamp from a practical perspective is that the bulb is rated to last up to 10,000 hours, and it emits a lower amount of heat than a standard light bulb.
My only minor issues with the OttLite natural daylight desk lamp have more to do with the design rather than the functionality. Personally I found the on/off push-button to be a little bit difficult to use sometimes because of how thick the base is. As a guy with average size hands, there just isn’t a good way to get a firm one-handed grip on the light’s base to press the button. This certainly is not a deal-breaker because of the other great qualities that the light provides far outweigh the need for my lazy self to actually have to use two hands to turn this on and off. I feel like this issue could probably be solved with a few sturdy rubber feet placed on the bottom of the base so the light is not prone to sliding about when you want to turn it on and off.
