Pentel Graphgear 1000 3mm

The Pentel Graphgear 1000 (via Amazon) is a pretty popular mechanical pencil thats definitely got that engineering or drafting look and feel to it, rather than looking like it was designed for every day writing.  Don’t take that the wrong way though because you can definitely use this mechanical pencil for any of those purposes.

Pentel Graphgear 1000 Grip

For starters, the grip section on the Pentel Graphgear 1000 has both a metallic knurled grip as well as an evenly disbursed set of oval rubber grips that protrude through the metal grip.   The rubber parts of the grip section are sort of an orange brown color which indicates the size f a .3mm lead.  In addition to the .3mm version, you can also get a .5mm, .7mm, and .9mm version, each of which are given different color grip sections to easily identify them.

Pentel Graphgear 1000 Body

Overall the body of the Pental Graphgear 1000 is very dramatic looking in my opinion.  The knurled grip with its oval protrusions, the sleek silver body, and the very long and angular clip give it somewhat of an exotic car feel as compared to many other mechanical pencils.  Even the number 3 printed towards the top of the body of the pen to indicate the lead size has a NASCAR look and feel to it from my perspective.  If there is a such thing, this looks like a very fast mechanical pencil.

Pentel Graphgear 1000 Clip

The clip on the Pentel Graphgear 1000 sweeps down at a rather drastic angle as you can see above, and when you actually use it you can feel that its got quite a bit of tension behind it under the spring.  It can clip onto something pretty thick and can also hold on to quite a few sheets of paper.  You probably won’t want to use the clip for either of those resaons though because it was actually designed to serve a much more practical purpose.  You can see the clip in this picture actually rests on a small window cut out of the body of the pen, which allows for you to retract the lead collar back inside the pencil body and make it much less likely to break when transporting.  Be careful though, if the lead collar is not extended yet and you wrap your fingers all the way around the pen near the clip as you hit the plunger, its possible to get your fingers pinched between the clip and the body.  This stings a bit as I should know since I’ve done it multiple times since I’ve owned this pencil.

When you press the plunger down it extends the lead collar out through the tip of the pencil in preparation for writing with it.  Once the tip is extended, the clip locks down keeping it pushed outside of the body of the pencil.  If you want to retract the lead collar to prevent it from snapping or bending while writing then just simply press down the top of the clip to open it, and the lead collar simply retreats back into the pencil body.

Pentel Graphgear 1000 Lead Indicator

One really useful and cool feature of the Pentel Graphgear 1000 is the small lead indicator above the grip section.  You can turn this small window as a way to remind yourself what lead you have loaded up n your pencil.  This is really helpful for someone like me that cant remember what he ate for dinner tonight, but in two weeks will want to remember what kind of lead he put in the pencil.

The close up here shows the tip and grip section removed to expose the lead type indicator.  In order to twist the window in the grip to its appropriate selection, all you need to do is gently loosen the tip slightly then twist the grip until the window is open in front of the type of lead you are using.  Its a pretty simple solution to a larger issue.  The lead indicator has a spot  for H, HB, B, 2B and 2H leads.

Pental Graphgear 1000 Eraser and Plunger

The eraser on the Pentel Graphgear 1000 isn’t that big, but it can be adjusted upwards as you use i as there is more that you don’t see of it in this picture because it extends deeper inside of the pencil.  Its also worth noting that the cap that covers the eraser is pretty long so don’t be surprised when you remove it that it seems to be taking longer than expected to remove.  The plunger is also kind of interesting as it seems like even with a full depression of the plunger, the amount of lead that advances is pretty minimal.  It might take 3 presses down of the lead before getting enough lead extended to start writing or drawing with.

The overall writing experience with the Pentel Graphgear 1000 has been great.  Although the pencil is mostly made of metal components, its very light weight and evenly balanced.  The grip section is very comfortable and makes for easy control of the pencil, even when using it for drafting or more precise writing tasks.  When writing the lead advances smoothly and there is no excessive play or rattle between the lead and the sleeve.   Grab one for yourself on Amazon and don’t forget that there are other sizes available outside of this .3mm version that we took a look at here today.
