Colon cleansing dates back to ancient times but it regained popularity several years ago. Although some medical professionals claim that colon cleansing is not necessary, many people swear by it for improved health and overall well being. There are two general methods of colon cleansing which involves using products such as laxatives or herbal teas while the other involves visiting a practitioner.

The idea behind colon cleansing is that mucus builds up in the colon which produces toxins contributing to many health conditions. Colon cleansing is believed to remove impurities that have built up in the body. Many people report feeling calm and energized following a colon cleansing. People often begin to eat healthier after going through a colon cleansing. It is believed that build up toxins can cause a host of health problems and colon cleansing can boost the effectiveness of the immune system by removing those toxins. Colon cleansing thereby improves health and well being, however there are some do’s and don’ts of colon cleansing.

As with any procedure there are potential risks so it is important to be aware of possible side effects. Some of the side effects that may occur with colon cleansing include dizziness, nausea, abdominal cramps and vomiting among others. It is also possible that certain products such as herbs could interact with prescription medications so it is best to consult your physician before beginning a colon cleansing if you are taking prescribed medications.
