In order to give you an idea of the size of the Silicon Power Jewel J80 USB 3.0 flash drive, the above pictures of it sitting with a dime put it in perspective. The body has a zinc alloy casing that has been treated to be resistant to scratches and fingerprints. I can say that from handling it a bit so far and having it in and out of my pocket as well as intentionally roughing it up a bit, both of these claims seem pretty legit.

The reason I purchased the Silicon Power Jewel J80 USB 3.0 flash drive was simple. I wanted to take advantage of the additional security you can gain from the password management tool LastPass by using a USB flash drive for two factor authentication. Basically this means that nobody can access your stored passwords without physically having your USB drive in their hands and knowing your login information to the LastPass website. Ironically I had this in mind before the recent LastPass hack, which was relatively benign and didn’t compromise any sensitive information. No service like LastPass will ever be hack-proof, so taking some responsibility to do what you can to make access to your private and sensitive information is a must.

With the simple and sleek design, I actually forgot it was even on my key chain while it was in my pocket. For me, having anything extra in my pocket is usually a nuisance and I try to avoid it. The actual functionality of the Silicon Power Jewel J80 has been great so far. In doing some benchmark tests with online tools, as well as testing with some actual files, the transfer rates were pretty quick due to the USB 3.0 classification. I didn’t transfer a huge number of large photo, video, or other media files, but in transferring smaller files like these there were no hiccups and everything was moved back and forth very quickly.

My preference is to usually go with the largest capacity on flash drives and similar items as long as the pricing doesn’t get crazy, so I grabbed the 64GB version instead of the smaller 8,16, and 32GB versions. Whatever size makes most sense for your needs, I’d highly recommend the Silicon Power Jewel J80 USB 3.0 flash drive (via Amazon) for the great design and the durability. Also give some thought to securing your personal data like passwords by signing up for LastPass and using this for your dual-factor authentication needs. Note that the LastPass link there is an affiliate link that gives both you and I a free month of the premium service, which is only $12 a year anyway, but it never hurts to save a buck or two.
