Blogging has become so popular in the last few years that just about everyone has a blog about something! Whether you have strong opinions about celebrities, want to start a small business, or just want to journal your trip to Africa, you can have a blog! But when starting a blog, the first thing you’ll most likely notice is that when it comes to the site and name of your blog, you have two choices. There are many free platforms that offer free blog hosting services, such as www.wordpress.com. However, the only real advantage to these types of sites is that they are free. Other than not having to pay a very small monthly fee, you will soon find that there are many more advantages to having your own domain name while blogging. There are, in fact, no disadvantages.
The first benefit to having your own domain name while blogging, is that your page will appear higher in ranking in Google. All bloggers know how important Google Page Rank is. This is the structure for which Google uses to organize what search engine results come up first on a page. Having your page be one of the first that people see means that they’re most likely to go to your site, instead of searching through pages and pages. Should you use a free platform such as WordPress, it is the platform that will get the Page Rank, and not your particular address.
Not only is Google Page Rank especially important if you are using your site for business purposes, but having your own domain name also looks much more professional. If you use a free platform for your website, you will need to also sign up for a free email address, such as Yahoo or Hotmail. There is of course, nothing wrong with this valuable services but if you are running a business from your site, you want your customers to know that they’re being taken care of is a professional manner. Plus, domain emails are usually much easier to remember than free service email addresses!
Another huge benefit that your own domain name will have over a blog name on a free platform is the design and look of your blog. If you want your blog to stand out from the millions of blogs that are currently on the web, you will need to make it look and feel different from everyone else’s. When you use a free platform service, you will be restricted to the templates and designs that they have available. These templates are also quite useful and there are very many of them. However, there is still not the variety that you will have with your own domain name. With your own domain name, you will be able to completely customize the look of your blog and change it, or add to it, easily whenever you wish.
Having your own domain name usually costs less than $10/month. It’s a very small fee and you can find a hosting company that will carry your site about as easily as you can find blogs on the Internet! With all the advantages individual domain names have over free platforms, it’s hard to see why you would choose anything else!
