Tiger Sharks Identification and Information

The tiger shark is one of the more fascinating and terrifying creatures to roam the ocean. The fear aspect of the tiger shark is well deserved to a degree, as the tiger shark is only behind the great white shark in human shark attacks. This fear of the tiger shark is often overblown, however, as it is with most shark attacks. The odds of encountering one of these massive sharks is next to nothing, and if you do the odds of attack are slimmer still.

The tiger shark is no doubt considered a very dangerous predator. One reason for this is because this shark will eat anything that presents itself. This has included waste baskets, sea snakes, fish, whales, car tires, plates, turtles, birds, and yes, even humans. This flexible eating pattern is one of the reasons the tiger shark is particularly dangerous to human beings.

The great white shark is known for wanting primarily blubbery seals, and things that are high in fat content. For this reason, the great white will often take a bite from a human being, and then simply swim away. Not so with the tiger shark. The tiger shark usually hangs around and comes back for the whole dinner. This makes them very dangerous and the danger increases exponentially once the tiger shark has taken a bite.

The tiger shark gets its name from the vertical stripes that are most commonly found on youngsters. As the tiger shark gets older, they tend to have these stripes fade away. The tiger shark has a very blunt snout for a shark, and it is generally flat across.

The tiger shark grows to sizes in excess of 20 feet in some cases, but the average is closer to 15 feet. They can reach weights of 2000 pounds or more, and can live a half decade.

Tiger sharks are found primarily in tropical and sub-tropical locations. They are found out at sea, and in close to the shoreline in some situations. Wherever the food sources are, the tiger sharks are not far behind. They are very determined hunters.

Though the tiger shark is considered a man eater, they are still very much misunderstood. They are doing what comes naturally, and some recent studies have revealed that they do not attack every chance they get. Some divers have actually dove with these massive sharks. Anytime a tiger shark is known to be in the water, or even suspected, you should get out of the water immediately. Regardless of the data, it is not a good idea to swim with sharks that are known to eat us.

In spite of the dangers of a tiger shark, they are becoming more and more rare in the wild. Tiger sharks are harvested and killed on a regular basis, and they are heavily bought and sold on some markets. Their fins are of particular value to poachers. This over-fishing has led the tiger shark to become somewhat endangered, and has put the species in serious danger. Even though the tiger shark is dangerous, it is still a part of the natural order of the ocean. They should not be killed simply for doing what they are meant to do. Tiger sharks clean up our oceans and keep the cycle of life moving.
