What you do, what you feel, and many of your everyday choices affect the way your skin looks. Here are a few points that will help you retain your youthful appearance as you age.

Plan your diet: Include complex carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals in your diet to ensure adequate nutrition for your skin. Vitamin C or E in your anti ageing cream is a good choice; however, you will benefit more if you include these nutrients in your diet as well. Complex carbohydrates and proteins may also prevent breakouts.

Exercise regularly: Exercise provides a number of benefits for your skin. It flushes out toxins accumulated on the skin, enhances the blood circulation and unclogs the skin pores. The enhanced blood flow ensures the supply of more nutrients and oxygen to the skin. This, in turn, helps in collagen build-up, necessary for the prevention of wrinkles.

Cut down caffeine and alcohol consumption: Coffee, tea and alcohol cause the body to lose water; this result in dry skin, a common cause of wrinkles and fine lines. Moreover, alcohol may lead to aggravation of rosaceous breakouts. It is better to avoid the intake of these beverages regularly.

Avoid the sun

: Keep out of the sun as much as possible; the sun is the worst enemy of your skin, especially as you age. If you need to go outdoors, make sure you apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 30. Choose a natural moisturizer with titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, or avobenzone to prevent sun damage.

Quit smoking: Smoking is next on the list of the enemies of ageing skin, just after the sun. Smoking lowers blood flow to the skin; this also reduces the supply of oxygen to the skin. The collagen breaks down, which results in fine lines and wrinkles. It is not possible to reverse this damage; the only solution is to quit smoking.

Sleep properly: Lack of sleep can have considerable effect on the appearance of your skin. Make sure you get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night. However, keep in mind that if you sleep on your side, the portion of your face pressed against the pillow may have wrinkles. It is better to sleep on your back to prevent this.

Follow a daily skin care regime: With age, your skin is unable to create or lose skin cells faster. The breakdown of collagen and loss of elastin also affects its appearance. Regular cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising are important for ageing skin. Choose products with natural components to ensure effective results.

Keep your skin clean: Use non-drying organic soap to cleanse away the impurities before you go to bed. If your skin is too dry, choose a cream-based cleanser instead. The accumulation of dirt and pollutants may lead to breakouts if you fail to cleanse your skin regularly. Removal of dead skin cells is also necessary to let your skin breathe.

Seek solutions for skin problems: Ageing may result in problems such as pigmentation, melasma and acne. Wear sunscreen every time you go out of the home; the sun may only aggravate the problem. Choose moisturisers with retinoids, vitamins, azeleic acid and such other components to reverse the signs of these problems.
