What is Business Process management Notation?

Aim of business process management notation is to support BPM for both the business users as well as the technical users. This is done by offering a notation intuitive to multiple business users but it is still capable of representing even the most complex process semantics. BPMN is a graphical and logical representation for the specification of business process in workflow. It offers a standard form of notation which can be understood by various business stakeholders. It also acts as a common language bridging communication gap between business process implementation and design.

BPMN modelling makes use of simple and creative diagrams with consistent and limited set of some graphical elements. They are uniform and easy-to-learn diagrams. They are also customisable in nature since process experts can comfortably create their own Artifact and Flow Object in order to make their diagrams comparatively clearer and understandable. It brings a more usable and powerful experience in business process management to the stakeholders and experts within an organisation right from operations to IT.

Process modelling always required a notation in the past since multiple notations were used for modelling processes. First-generation notations used block diagrams and flow diagrams as representatives but with time, requirement of a more sophisticated notation was felt. This is one of the reasons that led to the development of a new notation called the business process modelling notation.

BPMN can be counted among one of the most comprehensive notations brought into use for the purpose of business process modelling. Here are four categories of elements defined by BPMN –

Flow object: Flow object refers to gateways, activities and events. Activities can refer to sub-processes or tasks. Events are results and triggers. Start, immediate and end are the three kinds of events that are supported.

Connecting Objects: They are used to connect one flow object to another. Connectors are associations, message flows and sequence flows.

Swim lanes: They are used for organising activities in multiple visual categories so that functional capabilities and different responsibilities can be illustrated. Lanes and pools are often used for swim lanes.

Artifacts: Process of adding particular context to business process that needs to be modelled makes use of Artifacts.

It requires business analysts to create initial drafts with the help of their technical skills since they can implement the right technology required for performance of those processes. BPMN also offers businesses a capability of analysing their existing internal business procedures in the form of a graphical notation. Users can make note of symbols and text in the BPMN diagram. Text is a clear refinement of the graphical element.

It is, therefore, important for the business analysts to recognise and analyse various notations of a specific business process. It revolves across implementation, development, monitoring, execution and analysis and plays a vital role in Business Process Analysis. Goal of BPMN is to provide a notation system that can be comfortably understood by business users. BPMN plays a crucial role in the overall development of the business by analysing obstacles and enhancing productivity.
