What’s In a Smile; How to Select a Cosmetic Dentist

All dentists are not created equal and neither are all cosmetic dentists. A dentist is not necessarily an expert in cosmetic dentistry. Some dentists specialize in the treatment of dental problems without focusing on the cosmetic aspects of a person’s smile. A cosmetic dentist, on the other hand, should be a dentist that completed training in the art of cosmetic dentistry upon graduating from dental school.

It takes time to select the right cosmetic dentist for your needs and cosmetic goals. You do not want to leave the future of your smile in the hands of just anyone. Take the time to meet with at least three cosmetic dentists before having any work performed on your teeth.

Take the time to learn as much as you can about the dentist during your meeting. If the dentist rushes you or seems apprehensive about answering your questions, move on to the next cosmetic dentist on your list. Talk to each cosmetic dentist and let them know what work you want done on your teeth. The dentist should provide you with feedback as to whether your expectations are realistic or not.

Talk to each cosmetic dentist about their experience. How long have they been a dentist? For how long have they specialized in cosmetic dentistry? Where did they receive their training? The dentist should have their credentials displayed somewhere in their office. You should even ask how many patients they have worked for to date. (Even if they cannot give an exact number, they should be able to provide you with a good estimate). You can even inquire as to how many times the dentist has performed your particular type of cosmetic work.

A cosmetic dentist should be able to provide you with pictures of their work. They should be able to show you photos of patients from both before and after they had their cosmetic dentistry work. Look over the pictures carefully to determine if you think the cosmetic dentist will be able to provide you with the best work and highest level of results.

You might have no idea where to begin in selecting a cosmetic dentist. If your regular dentist does not specialize in the type work you want to have done, you can ask them for referrals. You could even talk to your family physician to determine if they know any cosmetic dentists with a good reputation in your area.

Start talking to friends, family and coworkers for any referrals and feedback. It is highly likely that someone has had experience with a cosmetic dentist. Any recommendations that your family and friends can offer, will at least provide you with a starting point when you want to start interviewing cosmetic dentists.

If you cannot receive any recommendations or referrals, you can use yellow page ads. Search for cosmetic dentists. This is not the best approach because you will not know anything about the dentists that you go to meet. You will need to carefully interview each cosmetic dentist. You can even perform a Google or other search online to see if you can learn any additional information about the dentist.

Take your time to select a cosmetic dentist that is able to provide you with a great smile!
