The Chihuahua is the world’s smallest dog breed. This dog breed became the most well known because of the Chihuahua which was featured in the Taco Bell commercials. As one could probably guess, the Chihuahua is a dog breed which has Mexican origins. In fact, the dog breed was named after a state in Mexico which is called Chihuahua. Here are some interesting facts about the world’s smallest dog breed.
Size
Generally, the way that a Chihuahua is measured in size is according to its weight. A Chihuahua which weighs less than six pounds is considered average by standards. However, Chihuahuas which weigh between two and four pounds are considered to be the most ideal according to the standards set forth for this dog breed. The height of a Chihuahua is known to vary much more than many other dog breeds. This is because there is not a set standard for height. Chihuahuas can range anywhere from six to sixteen inches tall.
Coat and Colors
There are both long and short haired Chihuahuas. The size guidelines for Chihuahuas apply to both of these varieties of the breed. A very interesting fact about long haired Chihuahuas is that, unlike many other dog breeds, they are actually known to shed a lot less than the short haired varieties. Chihuahuas in general only require minimal grooming. The coloring of a Chihuahua can range from solid to patterned, with spots and markings. The colors of a Chihuahua can include black, white, fawn, red, cream, blue, and chocolate. Keep in mind that there is not really a standard coloring for Chihuahuas, as there are so many varieties.
Temperament
When choosing a dog breed, it is important to consider whether their temperament matches your lifestyle. Chihuahuas are not a dog breed that is suitable for everyone. While they are known to be affectionate and loyal, Chihuahuas are said to usually attach themselves to one person. They are known to have an aggressive personality, which means that they are not the most well suited in households which have small children or other pets. Chihuahuas are known to be very protective of their territories. This makes them a great breed choice if you want a dog that will alert you.
Complications Due to Small Size
It is important to keep in mind that while some people love the idea of having a small dog, this is not often the most suitable choice for every family. Those who have rough children, for example, may want to think about a slightly larger breed than the Chihuahua. They are known to be very prone to injuries due to their small size. Also keep in mind that the small size of a Chihuahua requires assistance during child birth.
If you are thinking about choosing the world’s smallest dog breed for your home, it’s important to do your research. While Chihuahuas can be a very suitable option for many households, they are not the best choice for everyone. That said, Chihuahuas are still a very attractive and loving breed.
